How to Get the Most Out of Your HVAC Unit

Summer temperatures are here, and your HVAC unit may seem more important than ever to keep your home cool and comfortable. The performance of your system this summer can be a big concern, both for your comfort and your wallet. An efficient HVAC unit can save you money, but how do you ensure that your system is performing well? Follow these tips to help you get the most from your air conditioning.

Upgrade Your Unit

If your system is old, it may be time to upgrade it for a new system. A new HVAC unit can save you money by working more efficiently to cool your home, and also can have less of an environmental impact.

Schedule Routine Maintenance and Inspections

Keeping your system in good shape with regular maintenance and inspections can help extend the life of your system. You system should undergo a thorough inspection each season, to check for leaks or needed repairs. Catching issues early can help keep repair costs low. Routine maintenance can also prevent you from needing to make repairs. Have your system tuned up annually to clean the condenser and evaporator coils, check the blower components, and top off refrigerant as needed.

Ensure Your System is Right for Your Home’s Size

If your system is larger than your home needs, it will be wasting energy, and have trouble removing humidity properly. Conversely, if your system is smaller than your home requires, it can be over-worked to keep your home cool. A strained system will require frequent repairs, lose efficiency, and allow mold and mildew to grow.

Make Changes Around Your Home

Small changes can help your system keep up with the rising temperatures outdoors. Switch your fans to spin counter-clockwise to move air around the room and cool you. Since the breeze only cools you, and doesn’t actually cool the air, you should turn off fans when you leave. Use blinds or curtains to cover your home’s south and west facing windows to prevent the sun from warming the inside of your home. Consider installing UV reflective tinting on your windows to further reduce the amount of solar warming. Try adjusting your thermostat by a few degrees as well. Often you can be comfortable at warmer temperatures, and gradual increases will help you adjust. Open the windows and turn off your air conditioning at night if it cools off outside, but be sure to close up your windows in the morning before turning your system back on.
